At the beginning of February we were sailing through Martinique with several families. The “Martinique Cup” was on a few days later. In this fun regatta between us, we would race two small inflatable catamarans in teams of two and a child had to be on the helm.
On that day, everyone was practicing their sailing skills or playing on the water. I had the opportunity to use an electric foiling board. It was pretty hard at first. I kept falling off. After a while I started to get it, and it was so much fun!
My friends were following me on a dinghy waiting for their turn. On my last try, I started swerving and lost control. The board flew up in the air and came smashing down into my forehead. It was the most pain I have ever felt.
Tama jumped in to grab me. Gabe and him helped me into the dinghy, there was blood everywhere. It felt hot as it dripped down my face.
We sped back to Gabe’s catamaran, Water Dogs. His parents Gavin and Val were surgeons in Canada before they moved on their boat, so I was in good hands! Tillman, a friend on another boat who is an anaesthetist rushed over and asked me if I wanted some strong pain relief, which was really kind but I chose to get a local injection instead. I don’t remember much about what happened next except that I was really well taken care of, and my dad being there was very comforting.
I was feeling a bit weak until Naomi and Gabe’s sisters Lauren and Amelia gave me some edible cookie dough that they had just made. The sugar gave me some energy. Gavin had done a good job giving me nine stitches.
